About Haiom People
The Haiǁom (also written Haiom or Heikum) are a San people of north-central Namibia, historically associated with the Etosha Pan and the surrounding woodland savanna. They are among the largest San groups in Namibia, generally numbering in the range of roughly ten thousand to nearly twenty thousand people. Distinctively, the Haiǁom do not speak a Tuu or Kxa language but instead speak Khoekhoe (Khoekhoegowab), the same Khoe language as the Nama and Damara, a legacy of long interaction with Khoekhoe-speaking herders.
History and society
The Haiǁom traditionally lived as hunter-gatherers across the mopane woodlands and grasslands around Etosha, hunting game and gathering wild plant foods, berries, and tubers. Many also worked seasonally for farmers and herders, occupying an intermediate position between foraging and wage labour. The proclamation of Etosha as a game reserve and its later formalisation as a national park led, in the mid-twentieth century, to the eviction of Haiǁom families from their ancestral lands, a dispossession whose consequences the community still contests through land claims and negotiations with the Namibian state. Today many Haiǁom live on commercial farms, in towns, and on resettlement land, and rank among the more economically marginalised communities in Namibia. Traditional society was egalitarian and organised into flexible bands linked by kinship and marriage, with food sharing and cooperative childcare as central values.
Appearance and adornment
The Haiǁom share the physical characteristics common to San peoples: short to medium stature, light yellowish-brown skin, high cheekbones, epicanthic eye folds, and tightly coiled hair. Traditional clothing was fashioned from softened animal skins, with leather aprons for both sexes and karosses used as cloaks and blankets.
