About Pashtun People

Pashtuns comprise approximately 15% of the Pakistani population per the 2017 Census — approximately 37+ million Pashto Mother Tongue speakers in Pakistan, plus approximately 16+ million in Afghanistan (where Pashtuns are the largest ethnic group, ~42% of population, separately enumerated under AF). Cross-border population totals approximately 53+ million Pashtuns globally — among the largest stateless ethnic groups in the world (Pashtun nationalist movements have called for Pashtunistan independence at various times). Concentrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province plus the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA, merged into KP in 2018), parts of Balochistan, and the substantial Pashtun diaspora in Karachi (which hosts approximately 7M+ Pashtuns, the largest Pashtun urban concentration globally) and other major cities. The Pashto language is part of the Eastern Iranian branch of Indo-Iranian (related to Ossetian, Yaghnobi, and the Pamir languages, distinct from Persian/Tajik/Dari which is Western Iranian). Pashtun social organization is structured around Pashtunwali (the tribal honor code) with substantial tribal-confederation political organization (the major confederations: Karlani, Sarbani, Bettani, Ghurghusht).

Typical Pashtun Phenotypes

Reference for AI generation — hair, eyes, skin, facial structure, build

Skin tone is predominantly Fitzpatrick III-IV with III the modal value — among the lighter-skinned South Asian populations, similar to or slightly lighter than Pakistani Punjabis. Hair texture is most often straight to wavy (Andre Walker 1A-2B), predominantly black to dark brown with non-trivial frequencies of medium brown and lighter variants. Facial features track Northwestern Iranian / South-Asian-adjacent source populations: taller-and-narrower nasal bridges (often more prominent than in Punjabi populations), fuller lips, oval face shapes with prominent dark eyebrows and beard growth in adult males. Eye color is predominantly brown but with elevated frequencies of hazel, green, and rarely blue variants — Pashtuns have one of the highest light-eye frequencies of any major South Asian population. Build is robust; adult Pashtun male mean stature is approximately 173-176 cm in 2010s-2020s cohorts.
