Their country is the Saryarqa, the Kazakh Uplands. The twentieth century was harder than either: the famine of the 1930s emptied the Argyn steppe, the Virgin Lands campaign filled its northern edge with settlers, and the Soviet test range at Semipalatinsk spent forty years detonating on ground that had been Tobykty pasture. Islam here is Sunni and Hanafi, worn lightly in public and seriously at gravesides, where the aruaq, the ancestors, are addressed directly.
