About Bangwato People
The Bangwato are the largest of the eight principal Tswana merafe, the chiefdoms that between them make up Botswana, and their country is the dry eastern stretch of it: hardveld and thornbush between the Kalahari sand and the Limpopo drainage, the Tswapong Hills to the south, the salt pans of the Makgadikgadi off to the west. The name traces to Ngwato, who broke from his brother's Bakwena line in the eighteenth century and whose people took the phuti, the duiker, as their totem. A bronze duiker stands over the royal graves on the hill above Serowe, capital since 1902, when the seat moved there after the water gave out at Phalatswe. Serowe is one of the largest villages in Africa and behaves like a small city that has declined to call itself one. Tswana settlement has always worked in three parts: a dense central town, the lands (masimo) some distance out, the cattle posts (meraka) further into the sandveld, with households shifting between all three by season. Public business happens at the kgotla, the semicircle of poles in front of the chief's place, where cases are heard in the open and objections are made to the kgosi's face rather than behind his back.
What distinguishes the Bangwato among Tswana groups is how much of their weight came from absorption rather than descent. The polity grew by taking in Bakalanga, Batswapong, Babirwa, Baherero and Basarwa communities as subject peoples, and Ikalanga, a Shona-related language, is still spoken widely across the Central District alongside Setswana. Their most consequential ruler, Khama III, held the chieftaincy for nearly fifty years, converted under the London Missionary Society, and used that authority hard: he banned liquor, shut down initiation schools and rainmaking, and pushed bogadi out of Christian marriage, which is why practices still common elsewhere in Tswana country thinned out here early. In 1895 he sailed to London with Bathoen I and Sebele I to argue in person that Bechuanaland should stay under the Crown rather than pass to Cecil Rhodes and his company, and they got most of what they came for. Two generations later his grandson Seretse Khama married Ruth Williams, an Englishwoman, and Britain, nervous about apartheid South Africa next door, exiled him for six years. He returned, gave up the chieftaincy, and in 1966 became the first president of Botswana.
