About Egba People
The Egba are a Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria who trace their modern existence to a collapse. When the Oyo Empire came apart in the 1820s and the Yoruba wars swept through the forest belt, dozens of small Egba towns were burned and their people scattered. Under a war leader named Sodeke they regrouped around a granite outcrop above the Ogun River and built a new town in its shadow: Abeokuta, under the rock. Olumo Rock is still there in the middle of the city, still climbed, still a shrine as much as a lookout. What makes the Egba distinctive is what they did next. Rather than dissolving into one new polity, each destroyed town rebuilt itself as a quarter of the new one, keeping its own name, its own chiefs and its own council. Abeokuta became a federation of townships instead of a capital, and the habit of negotiated authority stuck. Egbaland is organized today into four sections, Egba Alake, Egba Oke-Ona, Gbagura and Owu, each with its own oba, the Alake of Egbaland first among them.
Egba is a dialect of Yoruba, intelligible to Oyo or Ijebu neighbors but identifiable within a sentence or two, and Yoruba itself belongs to the Volta-Niger branch of Niger-Congo. Abeokuta was among the first places in Nigeria where Christian missions took hold: Church Missionary Society agents arrived in 1842, many of them Saro, Yoruba recaptives returning from Freetown with literacy and mission backing, and the first newspaper printed in Nigeria, Iwe Irohin, came off a press there in 1859. Christianity and Islam are both deeply established, while orisha practice, Egungun masquerade and the old judicial weight of the Ogboni society have not vanished so much as folded into the background of family and civic life. The Egba also held onto self-rule longer than most of their neighbors: the British recognized the Egba United Government as independent in 1893 and only annexed it in 1914. The sharpest turn since was the women's tax revolt of 1946 to 1949, when market traders organized as the Abeokuta Women's Union under Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti forced the Alake into temporary abdication. Those same markets, Itoku above all, remain the center of adire, the indigo resist-dyed cloth the Egba are best known for.
