About Afizere People

Izere belongs to the Plateau group of Benue-Congo languages. This is a dense cluster of small languages that are often mutually unintelligible, and it makes the plateau one of the most linguistically crowded corners of Africa. Izere is not a dialect of Berom, the larger language next door, and it varies from one settlement to the next. Most Afizere also speak Hausa and English, the working languages of Jos markets and offices.

The dispute has fed repeated bouts of deadly violence since 2001. Religion runs along some of the same fault lines. Today the Afizere are mostly Christian, though older ritual has not vanished, and traditional rulers still carry real weight in village affairs. For many Afizere, identity is a practical matter: it decides who has a say over land their grandparents farmed before there was a city on it.
