The treaty their Butre chiefs signed with the Dutch in 1656 was still in force in 1872, when the Netherlands handed its Gold Coast holdings to Britain.
They are Akan and matrilineal in the Akan way: descent, inheritance and the right to sit on a stool pass through the mother's line, so a man's heirs are his sister's children rather than his own. The language is not the Twi outsiders expect. Ahanta sits in the Bia branch, nearer to Nzema next door than to Fante or Asante Twi, and it is losing ground: Fante and Twi run the schools, the markets and the radio, and plenty of younger Ahanta now speak those first. One episode marks the Ahanta more sharply than any fort. In 1837 the chief Badu Bonsu II killed several Dutch officials, among them the acting governor. The Dutch caught him, hanged him and took his head. It went to the Netherlands and sat in a Leiden medical collection for more than a century and a half, forgotten until a Dutch novelist went looking for it in 2005. Ghana got it back in 2009 and buried it properly. Ahanta country today is also the address of Ghana's oil business: Takoradi is the onshore base for the offshore fields, and since 2007 the fishing towns behind it have been absorbing rigs, wages and newcomers on terms they did not set.
