About Derung People
The Derung are the people of a single valley. Around seven thousand of them live along the Dulong River in the far northwest corner of Yunnan, in a trench between the Gaoligong range and the ridges falling away toward Myanmar, and for most of their history that geography was the fact that governed everything else. Snow shut the passes for roughly half of each year. Salt, iron and news came in on someone's back over a mountain, or they did not come at all. People farmed buckwheat, corn and taro on burned hillside plots, hunted with crossbows, and moved between river and forest as the season dictated. A road reached the valley in 1999, a tunnel through the Gaoligong opened in 2014, and year-round contact with the rest of the country is new enough that most adults there remember its absence.
Their language, Derung, sits in the Nungish group of Tibeto-Burman, next to Rawang, which relatives across the border in Kachin State speak under a different name. It was never written. Messages and accounts traveled as knotted cords and notched wooden tallies instead, precise enough to call scattered hamlets together on the correct day. The name Derung is itself recent: the people took it in 1952, replacing Qiu, the term outsiders had used for them and which they disliked. Religion runs on two tracks, an older practice of nature spirits, household offerings and shamans, and a Protestant Christianity that came over the mountains in the twentieth century from the mission country of the Nu River and the Kachin hills. The one traditional festival is Kaquewa, the Derung new year, held at the turn of the year on a date each village set for itself and running as long as the food held out; its center is a shared ox, given by one household, killed in the open and divided among everyone present. The best known Derung object is the blanket, a striped handwoven cloth knotted over one shoulder, clothing by day and bedding by night.
