About Maonan People
The Maonan are one of the smaller of China's fifty-six recognized nationalities, a hundred thousand or so people concentrated in a handful of townships in Huanjiang, in the limestone hills of northern Guangxi. This is karst country: sharp gray peaks, thin soil in the pockets between them, water that disappears underground when you need it most. The traditional heartland is compact enough to name, three adjoining districts known as Shangnan, Zhongnan and Xianan, the upper, middle and lower "Nan," and a Maonan asked where the family is from will often answer with one of those rather than with a province. Farming that terrain rewards stubbornness, and the Maonan built two specialties out of it. One is stone. They quarry and cut the local limestone into door frames, cisterns, drainage troughs, grave tablets and the railings of their stilt houses, and their masons were hired well beyond Maonan villages. The other is cattle: the stall-fed beef cattle raised in Huanjiang are a regional brand, fattened on cut grass in pens under the house rather than grazed on open hillside.
Their language belongs to the Kam-Sui branch of Kra-Dai, which puts it beside Sui and Mulam and at a greater distance from Zhuang and Thai, and further still from the Chinese that nearly every Maonan also speaks. It has never had a script of its own, so ritual texts are written in Chinese characters. Religion runs on ancestors and on a crowded roster of local deities, chief among them Sanjie Gong, credited with bringing cattle raising to the region, and it has absorbed a great deal of Taoism without becoming Taoist. The most striking survival is the Feitao, a thanksgiving rite a family holds after a child is safely born, staged over a day or more by masked performers working through a fixed cast of carved wooden characters, part liturgy and part theater. The other fixed point in the year is Fen Long, the dividing of the dragons, held in early summer, when households steam glutinous rice dyed in colors and carry it out to the fields.
