About Zubu People
The Zubu were herding tribes of the Mongolian Plateau. The Khitan Liao and Jurchen Jin dynasties knew them by that name between the tenth and late twelfth centuries. They disappeared into the rise of the Mongols, who absorbed their people, and their name now survives only in Chinese-language chronicles. Zubu was a label used by outsiders, a word from frontier record keeping, and nothing shows that the tribes used it for themselves. The historian Wang Guowei argued in the early twentieth century that it was the Liao term for the Tatars, and most scholars have followed him, though the name often seems to cover neighbors such as the Keraites too. For the Liao court the Zubu were a problem that never stayed solved. The Liao approved their chiefs, took tribute in horses and camels and traded with them, yet the chronicles return again and again to raids and revolts. Early in the eleventh century the Liao built a walled garrison, Zhenzhou, deep in what is now Mongolia to watch the steppe. Their records split the tribes into northern and western divisions that often acted on their own. The biggest uprising began in 1092 under Mogusi, a northern Zubu chief the Liao had appointed themselves. It wore down Liao armies until he was captured and executed in 1100. Many historians identify him with Marghuz, a Keraite ruler remembered in Mongol tradition as the grandfather of Toghrul, the Ong Khan.
Little was written down about their beliefs. Like other steppe herders of the period they most likely honored the sky and relied on shamans. The Keraites, if they belong under the name, reportedly took up Church of the East Christianity in the early eleventh century. No one ever wrote down Zubu speech, though what is known of the Tatars and their neighbors points to Mongolic languages. The name outlived the Liao, and the Jin records give the clearest link to the Tatars. In 1196 the Jin campaigned against the Zubu, and the Secret History of the Mongols tells the same war as a fight against the Tatars, with help from the Ong Khan and a young Temüjin, the future Genghis Khan. Within a few years Temüjin had broken the Tatars for good, and the word Zubu fell out of use. Their descendants joined the Mongol armies and the later peoples of the Mongolian steppe. The name Tatar, meanwhile, came to be used across Europe and Asia for the Mongols themselves.
