About Jino People
The Jino were the last people China officially recognized as a nationality, in 1979, which says less about how long they have existed than about how thoroughly a small upland community can be overlooked. There are a little over twenty thousand of them, and almost all live where they have always lived: on Jinuo Mountain, the ridge east of Jinghong in Xishuangbanna, at the southern tip of Yunnan where China runs out into Laos and Myanmar. Before recognition they were counted with other groups, taxed by the Dai lords of the valley and later by Nationalist collectors, against whom they took up arms in the 1940s. Their own name is a claim about kinship, usually glossed as something like those who follow the mother's brother, a phrase that preserves the authority a maternal uncle held before the community settled into descent through fathers.
The Jino language belongs to the Loloish branch of Tibeto-Burman, which puts it closer to Akha, Hani, and Lahu than to anything spoken by the Tai-speaking Dai in the lowlands below. It was never written. Accounts were kept on notched sticks and knotted cords, and the history that mattered was sung. Their neighbors turned Theravada Buddhist centuries ago and the Jino did not follow: ritual life stayed with household ancestors and with the spirits attached to particular fields, trees, and water, mediated by the zhuoba and zhuose, the senior man and woman of the founding lineage, who set the farming calendar as much as they conduct ceremony.
The year turns at Temaoke in February, a festival for the forging of iron and the tools that made upland rice farming possible.
