About Dorvod People

The Dörvöd (also spelled Dörvöt, Dörbet) are the largest of the western Oirat-Mongol sub-groups in Mongolia — approximately 83,000+ per the 2020 Census, concentrated in Uvs Province in northwestern Mongolia plus cross-border populations in Russia (Kalmykia, the Russian Republic of Kalmykia hosts the largest single Oirat-descended population) and China (Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang). The Dörvöd speak the Dörvöd dialect of Oirat Mongolian, distinct from Khalkha Mongolian. The Oirat sub-group is one of the four major branches of the Mongol ethnic family (the others being Khalkha, Buryat, and the various smaller eastern Mongol groups), historically associated with the Western Mongolian / Dzungar khanate periods and the subsequent migrations of Oirat populations to the Volga region (the Kalmyks).
