About Yangyue People
The Yangyue were an ancient Yue people who lived along and south of the middle Yangtze, in what is now central and southern China. Chinese records mention them from about the 9th century BC until the Qin conquest in the 3rd. After that they were absorbed into the Han Chinese and other peoples of the south. They were one branch of the Baiyue, the Hundred Yue, a catch-all name that Zhou and Han writers used for the many non-Chinese peoples below the great river. Their own name for themselves is lost, and so is their language. The first half of the name is usually linked to Yangzhou, a huge southern province on early Chinese maps. That tells you more about how northern scribes saw the south than about how these people saw themselves.
Almost everything we know about them comes from records of wars fought against them. The Records of the Grand Historian says that Xiong Qu, an early king of Chu, marched on the Yangyue around the 9th century BC, as Chu grew from a minor state into the leading power of the south. About four centuries later the reformer Wu Qi, serving King Dao of Chu, is credited with bringing the Yangyue under Chu control. The real break came with Qin. After unifying China, Qin sent armies into Yangyue territory and split the far south into the commanderies of Guilin, Nanhai and Xiang. It also sent convicts and exiles to live among the Yue. When Qin fell, the official Zhao Tuo turned that frontier into the independent kingdom of Nanyue, which the Han conquered in 111 BC. By then the Yangyue name was fading into the wider category of southern Yue.
What they believed and how they lived can only be pieced together from accounts of the Yue in general, not the Yangyue in particular. Northern writers said Yue peoples cut their hair short and tattooed their bodies, a sharp contrast with Chinese men, who wore their hair long and tied up. Han sources also tell of Yue shamans who read the future in chicken bones, a practice the Han court took up after the southern conquests. The Yue languages were barely written down. Linguists usually link them to the Kra-Dai or Austroasiatic families rather than to Chinese, and scholars still argue over possible traces of them in southern Chinese dialects. The Yangyue legacy is scattered but real. It survives in the ancestry of people in southern China and in the long, disputed story of how a region of many peoples came to count as Chinese.
