About Yeyi People
The Yeyi are the water people of a country that is mostly sand. Their home is the Okavango Delta in northwestern Botswana, where a river that never reaches the sea fans out across the Kalahari into a maze of channels, reed beds and seasonal islands, and their neighbors have long conceded that nobody reads that maze better. The mokoro, the shallow dugout poled standing up from the stern, is theirs. Yeyi communities also sit along the Boteti River, around Lake Ngami, and across the border in Namibia's Zambezi Region, formerly the Caprivi Strip. They call themselves Wayeyi, one person is a Muyeyi, and the older colonial literature files them under Bayeyi or under the Tswana exonym Makuba, which they reject.
Their language, Shiyeyi, is Bantu but awkwardly so: it sits apart from the Setswana and Thimbukushu spoken around it, and it carries click consonants picked up from long contact with Khoe and San speakers, which is unusual this far from the Nguni south. That distinctiveness turned political. When the Batawana pushed into Ngamiland in the nineteenth century, the Yeyi were absorbed as subjects rather than partners, and independent Botswana's constitution then named eight Tswana groups as principal tribes and left everyone else outside the arrangement. The Wayeyi answer came through the Kamanakao Association, founded in 1995 to revive Shiyeyi as a written and taught language, followed by the installation of their own paramount chief in 1999 and a constitutional challenge decided in the High Court in 2001. The court found the ethnic distinction discriminatory. The amendments that eventually followed satisfied few. Meanwhile Shiyeyi keeps losing ground to Setswana in ordinary conversation, and much of the revival now happens in classrooms and at cultural days rather than at home. Most Yeyi are Christian, with ancestral observance and traditional healing carrying on quietly alongside church membership. The coiled baskets Botswana sells to the world, mokola palm fiber dyed brown with bird plum bark, are largely the work of Yeyi and Hambukushu women, and the income from them is one of the few things in Ngamiland that reaches households directly.
