The Jen are a small people of Nigeria's upper Benue valley. Like dozens of communities in this part of the Middle Belt, they are defined first by their language. Dza is one of the Adamawa languages, a large and loosely defined branch of Niger-Congo that runs east across the savanna toward Cameroon and beyond. Within that branch, Dza belongs to the Bikwin-Jen group and shares its roots with the languages of several nearby hill communities. The neighborhood is crowded. Jukunoid languages of the Benue-Congo branch are close by, Chadic languages start a short distance to the north, and Hausa, above all, is the language of markets, roads and radio. Then in the nineteenth century the Fulani jihad brought emirate rule into the Benue country, and the emirate of Muri was founded in this same part of the valley. After independence it went through several redrawings of state lines before becoming part of Taraba State in 1991.
