About Ikwerre People
The Ikwerre are the people whose farmland became Port Harcourt. When British colonial officials laid out the port just before the First World War, much of the ground came from Ikwerre villages around Diobu, with a further share from the neighboring Okrika. The city has since absorbed a long list of Ikwerre settlements, and the street map still gives them away: Rumuokoro, Rumuola, Rumuomasi, Rumuigbo. Rumu means roughly children of, and those names generally honor a founding ancestor. Outside the city the Ikwerre spread north across the dry upland of Rivers State, Nigeria, through towns such as Isiokpo, Elele, Omagwa and Emohua, above the mangrove creeks where Ijaw communities fish. In the rural districts they still farm yam, cassava and oil palm. Among themselves the name is Iwhuruohna.
Their language belongs to the Igboid branch of the Volta-Niger family. It is close enough to Igbo that speakers can partly follow each other, and closer still to Etche, Ekpeye and Ogba. Within Ikwerre itself, speech changes noticeably from one clan area to the next. That closeness is at the center of the most charged question in Ikwerre public life: are they a branch of the Igbo, or a people in their own right? The Nigerian Civil War hardened the answer. Rivers State was created in 1967, Port Harcourt fell to federal troops in 1968, and in the decades since, a large body of Ikwerre opinion has insisted on a separate identity within a multiethnic Rivers State, where Ikwerre politicians have gone on to hold the governorship. Igbo nationalists often dispute that position, and the argument is far from settled.
Most Ikwerre today are Christian, divided among Anglican, Catholic and a dense web of Pentecostal churches, but the older order has not disappeared. Each community recognizes its own traditional ruler, and lineage still governs how land is held. Obligations to ancestors show most plainly at funerals and town festivals, which pull Port Harcourt residents back to their home villages. Land runs through all of it. With the city pushing outward and oil and gas pipelines crossing their farmland, questions of ownership and compensation remain a constant source of friction inside families and between communities.
