About Ekpeye People
The Ekpeye are a people of the upland Niger Delta, and the one name serves for the people, their language and their land. That land lies almost entirely within two local government areas of Rivers State, Nigeria: Ahoada East and Ahoada West, which were split out of a single Ahoada council. Inside it, belonging runs through four clans, Upata, Ubie, Igbuduya and Akoh, and those clans still shape kinship, land claims and traditional authority.
The country is low, wet and green. Farmland, oil palm groves, freshwater swamp forest and creeks spread northwest of Port Harcourt, and the East-West Road cuts through on its way toward Bayelsa State. Farming has long set the pace of life. Cassava, yams and plantain come from the fields, palm oil from the groves and fish from the waterways, and turning cassava into gari is ordinary household work. Oil and gas companies arrived in the second half of the twentieth century and now share the landscape. Most Ekpeye today are Christian, in Anglican, Catholic and Pentecostal congregations, and church shapes the weekly calendar. The older religious world has not disappeared. Ancestors are still honored in family rites, community deities and shrines keep their custodians, and masquerades and dance groups turn out for festivals, chieftaincy occasions and funerals. Traditional rulers carry the title Eze. Burials of respected elders are elaborate affairs, often lasting several days, that draw relatives home from Port Harcourt and farther afield. They remain one of the clearest moments when Ekpeye identity is on public display.
