About Tallensi People
The Tallensi live in and around the Tong Hills of northeastern Ghana, a scatter of granite outcrops rising out of the savanna south of Bolgatanga, close to the Burkina Faso border. Compounds are built of mud with flat roofs, tucked against the boulders or spread across millet fields, and the land is dry, hard, and farmed for sorghum, millet, and groundnuts. They speak Talni, a Gur language of the Western Oti-Volta group, close enough to the Gurene and Nabit of their neighbors that outsiders lump the whole cluster together as Frafra, a colonial-era convenience the Tallensi themselves use loosely at best.
What makes them distinct is less a border than an arrangement. Tallensi society is built of patrilineal clans with no king above them, and it divides into two halves that need each other: the Namoos, who trace descent from Mamprusi incomers and hold chiefship, and the Talis, reckoned the original people of the land, who supply the earth priests. Neither can complete the ritual year alone. The Golib and Gologo festivals, which run the dry season from one end to the other, require both, and the timing of one governs when the other may begin. Meyer Fortes spent the 1930s here and made the Tallensi a textbook case for how a society can be orderly without a state.
Ancestors are the working center of Tallensi religion, and they are not gentle. The dead keep claims on the living, and the bond between a man and his father is treated as structurally dangerous: a first-born son is barred from his father's granary and may not wear his cap while the father lives, and a first-born daughter carries parallel restrictions toward her mother. Succession here is not celebrated. It is survived.
The Tong Hills also hold Tongnaab, an oracle whose reputation traveled. In the early twentieth century its shrine was carried south into Asante and beyond as an anti-witchcraft cult, drawing pilgrims from hundreds of miles away and alarming British officials enough that they dynamited the hill caves in 1911, then moved to suppress the cult outright. It survived both. Christianity and Islam have since taken hold in places, and labor migration pulls young Tallensi south to Kumasi and Accra every year, but the shrines at Tengzug are still working shrines, and the people who keep them are not performing for visitors.
