About Gadabuursi People
Among Somalis, a clan is less a curiosity than an address. It tells you where someone's people graze, who pays blood money alongside them, and whose elders sit down when a dispute needs settling. The Gadabuursi are one of the larger northern clans in the Dir family. They also go by Samaroon, the name of the forefather in their genealogy. They speak the northern form of Somali, a Cushitic language of the Afroasiatic family. Like nearly all Somalis, they are Sunni Muslims of the Shafi'i school. Faith sets the rhythm of the day and the terms of marriage and inheritance, while an older body of customary law, xeer, still handles much of what courts would handle elsewhere. The clan has two major branches, Habr Afan and Habr Makadur, and each splits further into lineages that matter in politics, in marriage and in settling feuds. Above them sits the Ugaas, a hereditary traditional sultan. The Gadabuursi trace the office back several centuries, and it still carries real weight in mediation.
Awdal is greener than much of the Somali north, and many Gadabuursi combine herding camels, sheep and goats with rain-fed farming of sorghum and maize. The region is also scattered with the ruins of medieval stone towns from the era of the Adal Sultanate. They are a reminder that this corner of the Horn had towns and trade long before colonial borders were drawn across it.
Borama has produced more than its share of turning points. In the 1930s a local religious scholar, Sheikh Abdurahman Sheikh Nuur, invented a script for writing Somali, now known as the Borama or Gadabuursi script. It never displaced the Latin alphabet Somalia adopted in 1972, but it remains a point of local pride. In 1993 the town hosted the clan conference that rebuilt Somaliland's government after the civil war. A few years later it opened Amoud University, one of the first universities in the territory. Dahir Riyale Kahin, a Gadabuursi, served as Somaliland's president from 2002 to 2010. For a clan outnumbered in Somaliland by the Isaaq, that is a considerable footprint on northern Somali public life.
