About Abgaal People

Jowhar, its main town, began in the 1920s as an Italian farming settlement named for the Duke of the Abruzzi. The Abgaal speak Somali, a Cushitic language related to Oromo and Afar. Two later presidents, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, are also Abgaal. The clan is still a major force in the politics of Mogadishu and of HirShabelle state, which is governed from Jowhar.
