About Alagwa People
The Alagwa are a people of the Kondoa hills in central Tanzania, called Wasi or Asi by some neighbors. What sets them apart most clearly is the language they speak at home. Alagwa is a Southern Cushitic language, part of the Afro-Asiatic family, whose main home lies far to the north in Ethiopia and Somalia. In Tanzania it survives in a small cluster called West Rift, alongside Burunge, Iraqw and Gorowa. Alagwa and Burunge are the closest pair within that cluster. Iraqw and Gorowa, spoken further north around Mbulu and Babati, make up the other half.
Historians of language see these four peoples as the last of the Cushitic-speaking herders and farmers who once lived across much of inland Kenya and Tanzania, long before Bantu speakers became the majority. Today the Alagwa are a minority surrounded by that Bantu majority. Their closest neighbors are the Rangi, and long contact has made speaking both languages ordinary. The Sandawe, whose language uses clicks, live nearby as well, which makes Kondoa one of the most linguistically crowded districts in East Africa. Swahili is the language of school, market and government, and its pull on younger people is now the main pressure on Alagwa.
Religion also divides the Cushitic family. Most Alagwa are Muslim, while their Iraqw relatives to the north are largely Christian. Islam reached the Kondoa area from the Swahili coast and through the Muslim Rangi, and it now shapes the week and the year: Friday prayers, the Ramadan fast, Islamic names, and the long white kanzu and embroidered cap men wear on religious occasions.
