About Akie People
The Akie are among the few peoples in Tanzania whose identity comes from the bush rather than the herd. The word Dorobo comes from a Maasai term for people who have no livestock. Outsiders used it for small forager communities all over Kenya and Tanzania as if they were a single population. The Akie reject the name. It lumps separate peoples together, and it calls them poor by the standards of herders, which tells you more about pastoralist values than about the Akie.
Their own language, also called Akie, belongs to the Kalenjin branch of Southern Nilotic and is closely related to the speech of the Okiek, the forest foragers of Kenya. The language is in serious danger. Generations of trade, intermarriage and daily contact with Maasai neighbors have moved many families over to Maa, and Swahili is the language of school, markets and government.
