About Oropom People
The Oropom were a people of northeastern Uganda, near the Kenyan border. He argued that they were what was left of the Late Stone Age hunting population of eastern Uganda, from before herding peoples arrived. It was a bold claim built on thin material, and no later fieldwork has filled in the picture.
The language is what keeps the Oropom in the reference books. Karamoja is already a place where old languages linger. The Kuliak languages, Ik and So, survive in its mountains as leftovers from populations older than the Nilotic majority. Oropom does not fit with them, and it does not fit with the Nilotic or Bantu languages around it either. Linguists list it as unclassified, and several treat Wilson's data with open caution. A word list taken from a handful of aging informants could hold borrowed words, mistakes or words made up on the spot. Whether Oropom was a true isolate, the last trace of a vanished language family, or partly a product of how it was recorded is still unresolved.
Nothing reliable survives about Oropom religion, social life or dress. Whatever descendants they left are part of the Karamojong and neighboring communities today, which keep no separate Oropom identity. What the Oropom leave behind is an open question about the Uganda borderlands: who lived on these plains and mountains before the cattle peoples came, and what language did they speak?
