Antankarana Erotic

The Antankarana are named for a rock. Karana is the limestone that covers the far north of Madagascar, eroded into the blade-edged pinnacle fields Malagasy call tsingy, and the name means the people who belong to it. This is not framing borrowed from the tourist signage at the Ankarana Reserve. The massif is ancestral ground, honeycombed with caves, sinkholes and underground rivers, holding tombs and places where speech and conduct are governed by fady, the local prohibitions. Their country runs from those ridges north to Antsiranana at the island's tip, south to Ambilobe where the royal line sits, and out to offshore islands such as Nosy Mitsio. They are one of the smaller Malagasy groups, upward of fifty thousand people, farming rice, keeping zebu, cutting cane, and working a coast that has been on the Indian Ocean trade circuit for centuries.

They began as a breakaway. In the seventeenth century a branch of the Sakalava royal house moved north and set itself up independently, and that separation still shapes how Antankarana describe themselves against their southern neighbors. The hard turn came in the 1830s, when Merina armies from the highlands pushed into the north and much of the population took refuge in the Ankarana caves. What survives of that episode is an account of people trapped underground and killed, and of King Tsimiaro getting out by sea to the islands, where he took Islam and afterward looked to the French for protection against the highlands. Both things stuck. Islam has been present in the royal line and the coastal towns ever since, alongside Christianity and, underneath both, the older business of the ancestors, whose relics and tombs are what the monarchy actually guards. Their speech is a northern dialect of Malagasy, an Austronesian language whose deep relatives sit in Borneo, thickened here with Swahili and Arabic vocabulary carried in on trading dhows. The most visible thing they do is the tsangatsaine, held roughly every five years at Ambatoharanana: a long pole is cut, carried and raised with a white flag at its head, and thousands come for a rite that renews the kingdom rather than merely remembering it. The king has no administrative power. The pole still goes up.
