The nineteenth century undid that. Expanding Somali clans drove them back, and the rinderpest epidemic that swept East Africa in the 1890s destroyed much of their cattle. That left the Orma concentrated along the Tana. Their neighbors there are Pokomo farmers who work the riverbanks. Herders need a path to the water and farmers need their fields left intact, and that old conflict has flared many times, most violently in the Tana Delta killings of 2012 and 2013.
Religion marks the other big turning point. The Orma once followed the Oromo religion centered on Waaqa, the sky god. Public life was organized through gadaa, a system of generational grades that men passed through, taking on political and ritual duties at each stage. Conversion to Sunni Islam during the colonial era wore that system down, and today Islam shapes prayer, dress, marriage and the Ramadan fast in Orma villages. The Orma also hold an unusual place in social science. The anthropologist Jean Ensminger did long fieldwork among them, and her study became a widely cited account of how a herding society moves from shared custom toward markets, cash sales of livestock and settled towns. Many Orma families are still working through that change.
