About Daman People
The Daman are one of the smallest distinct communities in China. They are a single village of a few hundred people at most in the Gyirong valley of southern Tibet. What sets them apart from their neighbors is ancestry, not language or faith. The usual account traces them to Nepal, to Gorkha soldiers who stayed on the Tibetan side of the border after the Qing and Gorkha war of 1788 to 1792. More than two centuries later they are Tibetan in nearly every daily habit, but they still carry a name that marks them as having come from somewhere else.
Gyirong sits low by Tibetan standards. It is a greener, forested valley pressed against the Nepal frontier, and for centuries it was one of the main routes between the Kathmandu valley and the plateau.
