A year later his son Ejei surrendered to the Manchus and handed over a seal said to have come down from the Yuan emperors. That symbolic handover set the stage for Hong Taiji's proclamation of the Qing dynasty in 1636. After a failed Chahar uprising in 1675, the Qing stripped away their hereditary leadership and reorganized them into the Chahar Eight Banners, run by imperial appointees rather than their own princes. In the 1760s, Chahar soldiers and their families were sent to guard the Ili frontier, which is why Chahar Mongols still live in Bortala. The name also lived on as a Chinese province, which was abolished only in 1952.
Ligdan also left a cultural mark. He sponsored the translation of the Buddhist Kangyur into Mongolian, and Tibetan Buddhism is still the core of Chahar religious life.
