About Chelan People
The Chelan are the people of the lake that still carries their name. Lake Chelan is a long, narrow glacial trough that runs some fifty miles from the dry hills above the Columbia River deep into the North Cascades of Washington State, and it is one of the deepest lakes in the country. The name is usually traced to a Salish word for deep water. Chelan winter villages sat near the lake's southern end and along the short, steep river that drains it into the Columbia. From there families moved with the seasons: up into the mountains to hunt deer, onto open slopes for roots and berries, and down to the big river when the salmon ran.
They spoke a dialect of Nxaʔamxcín, also called Columbia-Moses. It is an Interior Salish language they shared with the Entiat, Wenatchi and Sinkiuse-Columbia. The lines between these neighbors were never sharp. Families intermarried, fished the same places and spoke nearly the same way, and early American records sometimes counted the Chelan as part of the Wenatchi. The lake was also a road. At its head lies Stehekin, a name generally translated as the way through, where a trail climbed over the Cascade crest toward the Salish-speaking peoples of the coast. Rock paintings survive on cliffs along the shore, though a dam at the outlet raised the lake in the 1920s and put parts of the old shoreline under water.
Spiritual life centered on the guardian spirit, which young people sought alone in the hills and which was honored in winter dances. First-food feasts gave thanks for salmon and roots at the start of each season. Catholic and other Christian churches arrived in the nineteenth century and took their place beside those practices without simply replacing them. When the region opened to settlers in the 1880s, some Chelan families took individual allotments near the lake while others moved onto the Colville Reservation to the northeast. Today the Chelan are one of the Twelve Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. That single federally recognized government joins them with the Entiat, Wenatchi, Methow, Okanogan, Sanpoil, Chief Joseph's band of Nez Perce and others. Chelan identity continues there through descent, through the tribes' language programs, and through a name on the map that was theirs first.
