About Akoko People
Akoko is not one town or one kingdom. It is a cluster of communities on the northeastern edge of Yorubaland, held together by a shared name and a hard, handsome landscape of granite hills. A short drive away, Arigidi, Oke-Agbe, Ogbagi and their neighbors speak Arigidi, a separate language cluster. Ise and Auga speak Ukaan, and Ikaram and Ibaram speak Akpes. All of these belong to the Niger-Congo family, but they are not Yoruba, and linguists have not fully settled where some of them fit. Farming still anchors the countryside, but many younger Akoko people build their lives in Akure, Lagos or Abuja.
