About Aku People
The Aku are the Creole community of the Gambia, a people assembled by history rather than inherited from a single homeland. Their speech, called Aku or Gambian Krio, is an English-based creole close enough to Sierra Leone Krio that speakers of the two follow each other with ease. In Banjul it sits beside Wolof, the everyday language of the city, and English, the language of government and school, and most Aku move among all three without a second thought.
Most Aku are Christians, largely Anglican and Methodist, and for generations the church shaped community life, from mission schools to choirs to the social standing of old Banjul families. A Muslim branch, the Aku Marabouts, descends from Muslim recaptives, many of them Yoruba, and keeps Krio speech and family ties within Islam. Some customs carried from Freetown persist on both sides, among them the awujoh, a feast held to honor the ancestors. Under British rule the Aku were the colony's clerks, teachers, lawyers and traders, holding a place in public life far out of proportion to their small numbers. Independence in 1965 shifted political weight to the rural majority of the former Protectorate. The Aku, concentrated in Banjul and the nearby Kombo towns, lost much of their political prominence while holding their ground in the professions and the civil service. Emigration to Britain and the United States has thinned the old households, and intermarriage with Wolof and other neighbors has softened the community's edges.
