About Yuki People
The Yuki are the people of Round Valley, a flat basin in the mountains of Mendocino County in northern California, closed in by ridges that kept them apart from nearly everyone. That separateness is the first thing to know about them. Their language is related to nothing else in California except Wappo, spoken a hundred miles south around Napa, and to nothing anywhere beyond that. Linguists file the two together as Yukian and generally read the family as a survival from a population that was already in place before the groups that came to surround it. The Yuki had neighbors on every side and relatives nowhere.
They counted in eights. Rather than count fingers, Yuki counters counted the spaces between the fingers, laying sticks into the gaps, which produces a base eight system instead of the base ten most of the world settled on. It is one of the very few octal counting systems documented anywhere, and it runs through the numerals themselves.
Three divisions are usually distinguished: the Yuki proper of Round Valley and the upper Eel, who called themselves Ukomno'm; the Huchnom on the South Eel to the south; and the Coast Yuki, who lived off mussels, seaweed, surf fish and the occasional stranded whale along a narrow strip of the Mendocino shore. Religious life centered on Taikomol, the creator whose name means roughly he who goes alone, and on the initiation societies that carried his teaching, alongside a ghost ceremony in which men impersonating the dead took boys into the dance house.
What happened next is why the Yuki are not a larger people today. Settlers and their stock pushed into Round Valley in the mid 1850s, a reservation was carved out of the valley floor in 1856, and through 1859 and 1860 militia and settler companies ran killings in the surrounding hills that contemporaries called the Mendocino War. The population loss over roughly two decades is among the steepest recorded for any people in North America. That same reservation then became the forced home of Concow, Nomlaki, Pomo, Cahto, Wailaki and Pit River people marched in from elsewhere, and their descendants together make up the Round Valley Indian Tribes, still headquartered in the valley. The Yuki language lost its last fluent speakers in the twentieth century and is being worked back out of field notes and recordings.
