About Yuki People
The Yuki are the people of Round Valley, a flat basin in the mountains of Mendocino County in northern California, closed in by ridges that kept them apart from nearly everyone. That separateness is the first thing to know about them. Their language is related to nothing else in California except Wappo, spoken a hundred miles south around Napa, and to nothing anywhere beyond that. The Yuki language lost its last fluent speakers in the twentieth century and is being worked back out of field notes and recordings.
