About Orya People
The Orya were a medieval people of northern Manchuria. Liao and Song chroniclers of the late tenth and early eleventh centuries knew them as the Wure. They held out in a walled town beyond the Khitan frontier and were eventually absorbed into the Jurchen and Balhae populations of the Jin state. Most readings make them part of what was left of Balhae. When the Khitan destroyed that kingdom in 926, many of its people were moved southwest into Liaodong or ruled through a Khitan client court. Others drifted north and east into forest and river country where Liao authority thinned out, and they regrouped under their own leaders. Chinese sources treat the Orya as one of these holdouts. They lived among Mohe and Jurchen neighbors who shared much of their background.
They enter the record through other people's crises. In 975 Yan Po, an officer at the Liao garrison of Huanglong, killed the garrison's supervisor and revolted. Beaten in the field, he fled to the Orya town, a sign that it already lay beyond the reach of Liao law. In 995 the Liao sent an army to settle the account. The Orya leader, Wu Zhaodu, offered to surrender, but the commanders wanted plunder and pressed a siege instead. The walls held, the army pulled back with heavy losses, and the campaign became a costly failure for the Liao court. Later entries show the Orya sending tribute. That was the usual deal with a frontier community too stubborn to take by force.
Their leader's surname links them to Wu Xuanming, king of Jeongan (Dingan in Chinese). Jeongan was another Balhae successor state, and it wrote to the Song court around 981 about joint action against the Khitan. Some historians see the Orya and Jeongan as overlapping or successive phases of the same resistance. Korean scholarship groups both among the Balhae restoration movements, and the name Orya follows the Korean reading of the characters. Nothing of their language, their rites or their own account of themselves survives. What remains is a few terse lines in the annals of their enemies, and a question that still drives the history of Manchuria: how long did Balhae outlast its own fall? By the early twelfth century the name fades from the chronicles. Whatever remained of the Orya presumably merged into the Jurchen and Balhae subjects of the Jin dynasty, founded in 1115.
