About Ngulgule People
The Ngulgule are one of the smallest peoples in South Sudan, and what sets them apart is where they come from, not how many they are. Their language, Njalgulgule, belongs to the Daju family. The other Daju languages are spoken far to the north and west: in Darfur and Kordofan, in the Dar Sila region of eastern Chad, and in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. The Ngulgule are the family's southern outlier, a small Daju island in the country around Wau in western Bahr el Ghazal. Their neighbors speak Nilotic, Central Sudanic and Ubangian languages.
That wide spread points to a long history. In Darfur the Daju are remembered as rulers of an early state in the south of the region, before first the Tunjur and then the Fur came to power. Over the centuries, Daju communities spread across the southern edge of the Sahel. Nobody wrote down how the ancestors of the Ngulgule ended up this far south. What is clear is that the nineteenth century was a dangerous time to be a small community in western Bahr el Ghazal. Slave raiders working out of Darfur and Khartoum moved through the region, and many minor peoples were broken up, forced to move, or absorbed into larger neighbors.
Today the Ngulgule are Muslim. That makes them a religious minority in largely Christian South Sudan, but not an unusual one in the Wau and Raja area, where contact with the north brought Islam early. Arabic now carries much of everyday life. Linguists have long listed Njalgulgule as endangered, and older surveys counted fewer than a thousand speakers. In local politics the Ngulgule fall under Fertit, the umbrella name for the small peoples of western Bahr el Ghazal who are neither Dinka nor Luo. The label carries real weight. Since independence in 2011, disputes over land and county boundaries around Wau have often been framed as Fertit against Dinka.
For a people this small, the language does most of the work of keeping the identity intact. It is the clearest surviving evidence of the Daju connection, and it is also the part most at risk.
