About Lopnurs People
The Lopnurs, who call themselves Loplik, are the people of the lower Tarim River and the lakes of Lop Nur, where the river runs out at the eastern edge of the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, China. Their fishing past lives on in family memory, in a dialect that still sounds different from the rest of the basin, and in a heritage village near Yuli where visitors eat fish roasted on sticks around an open fire, the way it was done on the old lakeshore.
