About Logba People
The Logba are a small hill people of eastern Ghana, and the thing that most clearly sets them apart is their language. Most of their neighbors speak Ewe. The Logba call themselves Akpana and speak Ikpana, a language only distantly related to Ewe. Their towns sit in the Volta Region east of Lake Volta, where the land climbs into the forested ridges along the Ghana-Togo border. Most settlements line the main road from Accra to Hohoe. Alakpeti is the commercial center, Klikpo is the traditional seat of the Logba's head, and Akusame, Adzakoe, Adiveme, Andokɔfe and Wuinta fill out the chain of towns. Tota is the outlier, high in the mountains east of the road.
Ikpana belongs to the Ghana-Togo Mountain languages. These are more than a dozen small Kwa languages spoken by hill communities such as the Likpe, Santrokofi, Akpafu, Buem, Avatime and Nyangbo. Early German scholars called them Togo remnant languages, on the theory that their speakers were older peoples pushed into the highlands by larger neighbors. Whatever the exact history, these languages kept features that Ewe and Akan mostly lost. The most obvious is a system of noun class prefixes: the prefix changes from one class of noun to another, and other words in the sentence change to agree with it.
