About Laguna People
Laguna is the youngest of the New Mexico pueblos and the largest of the Keres speaking ones, which is a useful corrective to the idea that Pueblo communities are simply ancient and unchanging. Its people call themselves Kawaika. The Spanish name comes from a shallow lake that once stood on the Rio San José, and the pueblo was formally recognized in 1699, in the unsettled decades after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and the Spanish reconquest, when families from Acoma, Zia, Cochiti, Jemez and further west gathered on the same ground. Consolidation, not antiquity, is the founding story. The pueblo now holds roughly half a million acres of mesa, arroyo and high desert west of Albuquerque, with Mount Taylor on the northern horizon, and is organized into six main villages: Old Laguna, Paguate, Encinal, Mesita, Seama and Paraje. Around eight thousand people are enrolled. The language is Western Keres, the same dialect group as Acoma, and Keresan is a family unto itself: nobody has convincingly tied it to Tanoan, to Zuni, or to the Navajo spoken all around it.
Religion runs in two registers at once. The mission church of San José, built in the early 1700s and still standing with its painted interior, anchors a Catholicism that is genuinely held, and the September 19 feast day draws thousands of visitors and returning relatives. Alongside it are katsina ceremonies, medicine societies and kiva obligations that are not explained to outsiders, and clan membership still descends through the mother. Laguna wrote a constitution in 1908, unusually early for a pueblo, and its governor holds canes of office including one sent by Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Two later episodes shaped the modern community. In 1880 the pueblo let the railroad cross its land in exchange for work, and by the early twentieth century Laguna families were living in trackside colonies at Winslow, Barstow and Richmond, California, keeping ceremonial ties to home across hundreds of miles. Then from 1953 to 1982 the Jackpile mine at Paguate was the largest open pit uranium mine in the world, cut directly into pueblo land. It paid wages to a generation and left tailings, contamination and a reclamation fight that is still unfinished. Both things are true at once, and Laguna writers, Leslie Marmon Silko foremost among them, have spent decades insisting on exactly that.
