About Kyode People
The Kyode are a small people of eastern Ghana. Two things set them apart: their language, and their close tie to the hill country around Nkwanta, between the northern arm of Lake Volta and the border with Togo. They call themselves Akyode and their language Gikyode, and outside sources have also written the name as Chode. No empire lies in their past. They are one of several small communities in this corner of Ghana that have kept their own language and a firm sense of local rights while much larger populations settled around them.
Gikyode belongs to the Ghana-Togo Mountain languages, once called the Central Togo languages. These are a scattered pocket of Kwa languages spoken in the hills along the border. Gikyode sits in the Na-Togo branch and is a distant relative of Adele, Lelemi, Siwu and Sekpele. Like those languages, it still uses a working system of noun-class prefixes, which the big regional languages such as Ewe and Twi have largely lost. That is why one root gives Akyode for the people and Gikyode for the language. At the Nkwanta market, Kyode people deal with neighbors who speak unrelated Gur languages such as Konkomba, so switching between languages is part of ordinary life. English is used for school and government.
Much of the area's modern history was decided far from Nkwanta. The area was part of German Togoland until the First World War. In 2019 the northern districts of the Volta Region were split off to form the Oti Region, which is where the Kyode now sit on the map. Locally, the bigger question has been who holds the original rights to Nkwanta itself. A chieftaincy and land dispute between Kyode and Adele communities keeps coming back, and it has turned violent more than once.
Christianity is widespread among the Kyode today, and older religious practice continues alongside it, as it does across much of the Oti Region. For a community this size, the language is the most distinctive thing they have kept. It is still a home language used every day, not just something saved for ceremonies.
