About Bulom People
The Bulom, also written Bullom, were the people Portuguese sailors found living on the Sierra Leone coast in the fifteenth century. In a real sense they are still the oldest residents of that shoreline. Since then their history has mostly been about other peoples moving in around them. Today the name covers two populations now separated by other peoples' land. The northern Bulom live across the estuary from Freetown, on the stretch still called the Bullom Shore, and up the coast toward Guinea. The Sherbro live to the south, around Sherbro Island, the Turtle Islands and the creeks near Bonthe. Many Sherbro use their own name first, but the languages show they are kin.
Their two languages, Bullom So in the north and Sherbro in the south, belong to the Mel branch of the Atlantic languages. Kissi, spoken farther inland, is a close relative, and Temne is a more distant one. Both languages are losing speakers. On the northern coast, Temne and Susu have been drawing Bullom So speakers away for generations, and the language now depends on older villagers. In the south, most Sherbro also speak Mende, which pushed toward the sea over the past two centuries and turned whole chiefdoms Mende-speaking.
This coast has taken hard blows. In the sixteenth century, Mande-speaking invaders called the Mane came down from the interior and set up new ruling lines over the coastal Sapi peoples, the Bulom among them. Before that upheaval, Sapi carvers made detailed ivory salt cellars, spoons and horns for Portuguese traders, and those pieces now sit in European museums. Then came the Atlantic slave trade, with European forts on Bunce Island and in the Sherbro estuary. It also produced trading families such as the Caulkers and Tuckers. Their English founders married into Sherbro ruling houses, and the lineages they started stayed powerful through the colonial era.
Daily life on the coast runs on fishing, smoked fish and rice grown in mangrove swamps. Religion comes in layers. Islam is strong in the north, and Christianity has deep roots in the south, where missions arrived early. Both exist alongside the initiation societies, Poro for men and Sande for women, which still shape what it means to be an adult, who holds local authority and what counts as proper conduct.
