About Kassena People
Kassena identity starts with a language, Kasem, and a stretch of savanna farmland that straddles the border between northern Ghana and southern Burkina Faso. That border is the second thing to understand about them. When Britain and France divided the Volta region at the end of the nineteenth century, the line ran straight through Kassena country, leaving Navrongo and Paga on the British side and Pô and Tiébélé on the French. Families still cross it for funerals, markets and marriages, and a farmer in Paga and a cousin in Tiébélé share a mother tongue while one learns English at school and the other French.
Kasem belongs to the Grusi branch of the Gur languages and is close kin to Nuni, spoken to the west. The Nankana, who share Ghana's Kassena-Nankana districts and markets with them, speak a language from a different Gur branch, nearer to Mooré, so the two peoples live side by side without a common language at home. Outsiders lumped the Kassena and their Grusi relatives together as Gurunsi, and in the 1880s and 1890s that country was hammered by Zarma horsemen raiding for slaves, Babatu the best remembered of their leaders.
Christianity arrived with the Catholic White Fathers, who opened a mission at Navrongo in 1906, and the town's old mud-brick cathedral is still a landmark.
