About Ioway People
The Ioway call themselves Báxoje, a name usually rendered in English as "gray snow," and they are the people the state of Iowa is named for, though almost none of them live there now. They were a river people before they were a plains people: villages of bark and earth lodges set on the bluffs above the Mississippi, the Des Moines and the Missouri, with corn, beans and squash in the bottomland and a long seasonal ride west after bison. That double economy, farming and hunting, put them at a crossroads and they worked it. Ioway traders moved catlinite out of the red pipestone quarries of southwestern Minnesota across half a continent, and French maps of the 1670s already list them by name.
Their language, Chiwere, is Siouan, close enough to Otoe and Missouria that the three are often treated as dialects of one tongue. Ho-Chunk is the near cousin, and Ioway tradition holds that all of them were one people near the Great Lakes before the split. Chiwere lost its last fluent first-language speakers in the 1990s and is now being rebuilt from recordings and field notes. Society ran on patrilineal clans, Bear, Buffalo, Elk, Eagle, Pigeon, Wolf and others, which set a child's name, their standing in the village, and the ceremonies they could enter. Religion today is layered rather than replaced: Methodist and Baptist churches, the Native American Church with its peyote ritual, and clan obligations that have never quite gone quiet.
The nineteenth century broke the nation into pieces. Treaties between 1824 and 1838 stripped the Iowa country, and survivors of repeated smallpox epidemics were moved to a reservation on the Great Nemaha River at the Kansas and Nebraska line. Allotment split them again in the 1880s, when a group left for Indian Territory. Both halves are federally recognized: the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska at White Cloud, and the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma at Perkins, which runs Gray Snow Eagle House, an aviary that takes in injured bald and golden eagles and returns molted feathers to Native hands. In 1844 a party of Ioway sailed with George Catlin's touring gallery and danced in London halls and before Louis Philippe in Paris. Several fell ill and died there, and are buried in foreign ground.
