About Imraguen People

Most Imraguen today speak Hassaniya Arabic, the Bedouin Arabic of Mauritania and the Western Sahara. Zenaga Berber, the older language of this coast, survives only in fragments and only further south. They are Sunni Muslims of the Maliki school, like their neighbors, with the Sufi brotherhoods of the region sitting quietly behind ordinary religious life.
What the Imraguen are actually known for is the mullet run. When the shoals move down the coast in autumn, men wade chest deep into the surf holding nets between them, a technique with almost nothing in common with boat fishing, one that rewards reading the water rather than covering distance. The famous part happens first: the fishermen beat the surface with sticks, and bottlenose dolphins come in and drive the mullet toward the shore and into the nets, taking their share in the chaos. It is one of a very small number of documented cooperative fisheries between people and wild dolphins anywhere. Since Banc d'Arguin was made a national park in 1976, they have been the only people licensed to fish inside it, and only under sail. That arrangement has protected the bank and frozen the Imraguen into a role: custodians on paper, squeezed in practice by industrial trawlers offshore, by the collapse of the older barter economy, and by the young leaving for Nouadhibou and Nouakchott.
