About Kurtey People
The Kurtey are a river people. Their villages sit on the islands and low banks of the Niger in western Niger, along the stretch between the Malian border and Niamey, and almost everything that sets them apart comes back to that water. Fula herders came down the river from the Macina region of what is now Mali and settled among the Sorko, the Songhay-speaking fishermen and boatmen who already worked these waters. What came out of that meeting is neither Fula nor Sorko. It is a people of its own. The descendants of the newcomers left Fulfulde behind and now speak Songhay, the language spoken along the middle Niger from Mali down through Niger. In everyday speech they fit easily among their Zarma and Songhay neighbors. Cattle came from one side of the family. The canoe, the net and a working knowledge of the yearly flood came from the other. A Kurtey household has traditionally drawn on all of these: rice grown in the river's seasonal floodplain, fishing, and livestock grazed on the islands and banks. The Kurtey are Sunni Muslims, and Islam shapes prayer, marriage and the feast days here as it does across western Niger.
In the nineteenth century the Kurtey had a hard reputation. Their skill with canoes made them effective raiders, and they were known for attacking riverside settlements and carrying off captives at a time when slaving shaped power across the region. French colonial rule, imposed around the turn of the twentieth century, ended that chapter. The same command of the river now serves farming, fishing and trade. The Kurtey are often named alongside the Wogo, another small island people on the same reach of the Niger.
