About Holikachuk People
The Holikachuk are the Athabaskan people of the middle Innoko River, a slow, looping tributary in western interior Alaska that runs roughly parallel to the Yukon before finally joining it. They take their name from a village that no longer has anyone in it. In 1962 and 1963 the entire community picked up and moved east to Grayling, on the Yukon itself, where the water was better, a school was viable, and the barges could actually reach them. Almost everyone who counts as Holikachuk today lives in Grayling or traces a line back to it.
What makes them distinct is simple to state and was, for a long time, easy to miss. Their language sits between Deg Xinag downriver and Koyukon upriver, geographically and structurally both, and for most of the twentieth century outsiders filed it as a dialect of one or the other. Linguists at the Alaska Native Language Center separated it out as a language in its own right only in the 1970s, by which point fluent speakers were already few. The last of them died in the 2010s. There is no graceful way to put that: a people were formally recognized as distinct at approximately the moment the evidence for it went quiet. Recordings and lexical work survive at the archive, and they get used.
The year still runs on the river. Kings and chums in summer, taken at fish camp and cut for the dryrack; whitefish and pike through the ice; moose in the fall, which weighs on a household budget in a village off the road system far more than any figure about it suggests. Religion is Christian, arriving with the mission stations that worked the lower and middle Yukon in the late nineteenth century, and it sits alongside the memorial potlatch, the central Athabaskan institution for grieving, giving away goods and settling what one family owes another. The Holikachuk share this and a great deal else with their Deg Hit'an and Koyukon neighbors, intermarriage among the three running back further than any of the labels do. Under the 1971 land claims settlement they fall within the Doyon region, which laid a corporate structure over much older understandings about who holds a claim to which stretch of country.
