About Opata People
The Opata were farmers of river valleys, and that fact organized nearly everything else about them. Their country is the eastern half of what is now Sonora in northwest Mexico, where the Sonora, Moctezuma, and Bavispe rivers run south out of the Sierra Madre Occidental through hot thorn scrub in which a floodplain is worth more than a mountain. They lived in compact towns strung along those rivers, took irrigation ditches off them, and grew maize, beans, squash, and cotton at a scale that startled the first Spaniards to walk through in the 1530s and 1540s. Coronado's expedition crossed the valley in 1540, and the state's name is usually traced back to what that valley was called. Among the peoples of the northwest they were the numerous ones and the settled ones, in a region where many neighbors were neither. The name Opata itself came into Spanish secondhand, from their O'odham-speaking neighbors; the largest branch called itself Teguima.
Their language sat in its own branch of Uto-Aztecan, paired with Eudeve, and near enough to Yaqui, Mayo, and Tarahumara to place them in the same wider grouping. Eudeve speakers held the western and southern edge of Opata country, Jova the higher ground. Jesuits reached the valleys in the 1620s and had the towns organized as missions within a generation, and Catholicism stuck: after 1767, when the order was expelled, it stayed the frame for public life, feast days and all. For roughly two centuries the Opata fought Apache raiders, and they fought them as allies of the Spanish crown and then of Mexico, serving in the presidial companies as paid soldiers. That standing was real and it was also corrosive. The closer the integration, the harder it became to tell an Opata town from a mestizo one on paper, and when a rising broke out in 1820 it was put down and its leader executed. Land losses ran through the rest of the century. The language went quiet in the twentieth, its last fluent speakers gone by around mid-century, which is why the Opata are so often written about in the past tense. The people are not past tense. Descendants still live in the same river towns of central and eastern Sonora, tens of thousands claim the identity in recent Mexican counts, and there is ongoing work to pull the language back off the page and into use.
