About Opata People
The Opata were farmers of river valleys, and that fact organized nearly everything else about them. Coronado's expedition crossed the valley in 1540, and the state's name is usually traced back to what that valley was called. The name Opata itself came into Spanish secondhand, from their O'odham-speaking neighbors; the largest branch called itself Teguima.

Land losses ran through the rest of the century. The language went quiet in the twentieth, its last fluent speakers gone by around mid-century, which is why the Opata are so often written about in the past tense. The people are not past tense. Descendants still live in the same river towns of central and eastern Sonora, tens of thousands claim the identity in recent Mexican counts, and there is ongoing work to pull the language back off the page and into use.
