About Fuyu Kyrgyz People
The Fuyü Gïrgïs are a small Turkic-speaking community in the farm country of Fuyu County, near Qiqihar in China's Heilongjiang Province, and their name is usually the first thing that confuses outsiders. On paper they belong to the Kyrgyz nationality, the same official category that covers the Muslim Kyrgyz of the Tian Shan and Pamir highlands in Xinjiang. In practice they share little with those Kyrgyz beyond an old name. Their ancestors were Yenisei Kyrgyz from southern Siberia, and their speech is closer to Khakas than to anything spoken by the Kyrgyz of Central Asia.
They reached Manchuria through two forced moves. In 1703 the Dzungar Khanate, the last great Oirat Mongol power, drove a large share of the Yenisei Kyrgyz south into its own territory. When Qing armies destroyed the Dzungar state in the 1750s, some of those displaced families were sent east to the empire's northeastern frontier and settled among Mongol and Daur neighbors. They never left. For more than two and a half centuries they have lived in the same corner of the northeast, a pocket of Siberian Turkic speech surrounded by Mongolic, Tungusic and Chinese speakers.
That isolation shaped the language. Fuyü Gïrgïs kept its Siberian Turkic core while taking in a great deal of Mongolian vocabulary, and its speakers have long used Mongolian and Mandarin Chinese alongside it. Fluent speakers are now few and mostly elderly, which puts it among the most endangered Turkic languages anywhere. Religion went its own way too. There is no Islam here. The community's traditional faith combines shamanic practice carried from Siberia with Tibetan Buddhism, the religion of the Mongols they settled among.
Village life today looks much like rural life anywhere in Heilongjiang, with the same fields, clothes and schools as the neighbors. What sets the Fuyü Gïrgïs apart is harder to photograph: family histories that run back to the Yenisei, a name they held onto through two deportations, and a language that a handful of older people still speak with each other. They are a reminder that China's official nationality categories were drawn over peoples whose stories are far more tangled than the labels suggest.
