Their descendants are counted today among the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma. Their name outlasted them on the map: Ayish Bayou still runs through San Augustine County, at the center of their former homeland.
What made the Eyeish a people of their own was a stubborn separateness. They lived much as their Caddo neighbors did, farming corn, beans and squash, hunting deer, and living in scattered homesteads rather than dense towns. Yet they belonged to neither of the major Caddo alliances, the Hasinai to the west or the Kadohadacho to the north. Spanish sources suggest their language differed noticeably from that of other Caddoan groups, though too little of it was written down to say exactly how.
Geography put them in the path of empire. The trail that became El Camino Real de los Tejas crossed their land, linking Spanish Texas to its tense frontier with French Louisiana. In 1717 Franciscan missionaries founded Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de los Ais among them. The mission was abandoned in 1719 during a flare-up with the French, rebuilt in 1721, and kept going until 1773, when Spain pulled its missions and settlers out of East Texas. Over those decades the friars reported meager results. The Eyeish traded with Spaniards and Frenchmen alike and kept their own religious life largely intact. The mission ground is now preserved as Mission Dolores State Historic Site in San Augustine.
The end came through disease, displacement and slow attrition. Epidemics that swept the region in the later 1700s hit hard among a people who had never been numerous. By the time American officials took stock of the tribes along the Louisiana and Texas borderlands after 1803, the Eyeish were a small remnant. They folded into the Caddo and shared that people's later removals. The Anglo-American settlers who poured into the Ayish Bayou District in the 1820s kept the name and little else.
