The Elgeyo, who call themselves Keiyo, are the people of a cliff. For generations most families built on the ledges partway down, high enough to escape the valley's heat and malaria, low enough to stay clear of the raiders who worked the open plateau above. One household might graze cattle on the cool highlands, grow millet and sorghum on the slope, and keep goats and beehives in the dry valley below. That vertical way of living, three climates within a day's walk, is what marks them out among their neighbors.
They are one of the Kalenjin peoples, and their speech is a Kalenjin dialect of the Southern Nilotic branch, close enough to Nandi, Tugen and Marakwet that conversation flows without much effort. Elgeyo is an outsider's label, usually traced to the Maasai, that colonial administrators fixed onto the map. Keiyo is the name people use for themselves. Society runs on patrilineal clans, each with its totem animal and its rules about who may marry whom, and on the cycling age sets shared across the Kalenjin world. After independence in 1963 families bought their way back onto the highlands, and the center of gravity moved uphill to maize, wheat, potatoes and dairy.
