About Bafumbira People
The Bafumbira are Ugandans whose first language is Kinyarwanda, and most of what sets them apart comes from that pairing. They live in Bufumbira, the high corner of Kisoro District where Uganda meets Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, below the volcanic peaks of Muhabura, Mgahinga and Sabinyo. In culture they belong to the Kinyarwanda-speaking world and share its clans, proverbs and ceremonies. In politics they have been Ugandan for more than a century. A European border agreement in 1910 moved the area from the northern edge of the Rwandan kingdom into the British Uganda Protectorate. For decades it was governed as part of Kigezi, and Kisoro became a district of its own in 1991.
