About Clackamas People
The Clackamas are a Chinookan people of the lower Willamette Valley in Oregon, and their name is still stamped across the map around Portland: a river, a county, a community. Their villages stood along the Clackamas River near where it meets the Willamette, a short paddle from Willamette Falls, one of the great fisheries of the Northwest. Spring salmon and the lamprey that inch up the wet basalt of the falls fed them, and wapato dug from the wetlands filled out the larder. They lived in cedar-plank houses, traveled by dugout canoe, and kept trade ties running down to the Columbia and beyond. Like their Chinookan kin, they shaped the foreheads of free-born infants on the cradleboard. A sloping brow marked someone who could never be mistaken for one of the slaves taken in raids or bought in trade.
Their speech belongs to Upper Chinookan. It is close enough to that of the Wasco and Wishram up the Columbia that linguists treat all three as dialects of one language, Kiksht. Kalapuyan peoples, speaking languages of a separate family, lived to the south and west. Lewis and Clark estimated the Clackamas at about 1,800 people in 1806. Within a generation, disease had cut them to a fraction of that, above all the fever epidemics of the early 1830s.
In 1855 Clackamas leaders signed the Willamette Valley treaty ceding their land, and in 1856 the survivors were moved to the Grand Ronde Reservation in the Coast Range foothills. There they became one strand in a confederation of western Oregon peoples. Chinuk Wawa, the old trade jargon, turned into a household language there, and Catholic missionaries settled in. Congress terminated the tribe in 1954, and recognition came back in 1983. Most Clackamas descendants today are citizens of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon, which teaches Chinuk Wawa to its children and has gone back to fishing Willamette Falls from a ceremonial platform.
Much of what outsiders can know about the Clackamas inner world comes from one woman. In 1929 and 1930, Victoria Howard dictated myths, tales and accounts of shamans and spirit power to the anthropologist Melville Jacobs. Her texts are still the main record of the language. They are full of Coyote, Grizzly Woman and tense family dramas such as Seal and Her Younger Brother Lived There, and later scholars have read them as carefully built oral poetry. They remain the clearest view of how the Clackamas told their own world.
