About Brong People
The Bono, called Brong in Ghana and Abron across the border in Ivory Coast, are the Akan group with the strongest claim to having gotten there first. Their towns sat at the northern edge of the forest, where the trees thin into savanna, and that position made them brokers. Gold came up out of the forest, salt and cloth and beads came down from the Niger bend, and the Bono towns of Bono Manso and Begho grew rich on the exchange for centuries before the Atlantic coast mattered to anybody. Begho was a real city by the standards of the 1400s, laid out in separate quarters: one for the Muslim Dyula merchants who walked in from Jenne, one for the smiths and weavers, one for the Brong themselves. Digs there keep turning up crucibles, spindle whorls, and imported glass.
They speak Bono Twi, the most northerly of the Twi dialects, close enough to Asante and Akuapem Twi to be understood without effort and distinct enough that another Akan can place a Bono speaker within a sentence or two. Descent runs through the mother. A man's heir is his sister's son, and the eight matriclans that organize Akan society everywhere organize this one too. Most Bono are Christian now, with a substantial Muslim population in the north and around Bondoukou, but the older religious machinery has not gone anywhere. The Apoo festival at Techiman and Wenchi is the clearest case: for a stretch of weeks each year, ordinary people are licensed to say out loud what they actually think of their chiefs, their neighbors, and each other, in songs composed for the occasion. Grievances get aired in public and the year restarts clean.
Asante broke Bono Manso in 1723, and the Bono spent the next two centuries subordinate to a state they consider younger than their own, which is the thing to understand about Bono politics. In the 1950s the Brong Kyempim movement pushed to be separated administratively from Asante, backed Nkrumah when the Asante backed his opponents, and won: Brong Ahafo Region was created in 1959. It was split again in 2019 into Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo. Techiman today is less a royal capital than a market town, host to one of the largest food markets in West Africa, where yams and tomatoes and onions move north and south in volumes that would have made perfect sense to the traders at Begho.
